Peak Bootcamp : Day #3

Day three is upon us and I feel like we are starting to get the hang of this boot camp regiment and settle into a routine. Last night we went into the makeshift recording studios (fantastically set up by the magicians at Nimbus School of the Recording Arts) to record a song we wrote for the Vancouver 125 celebration. We plugged away all night, some of us until 5:30 in the morning, and are very happy with how it went. The ruthless Peak Performance Project schedule had us out of bed again at the regular 7:30am so “free time” today is looking like it might turn into “nap time”.

In a nutshell day three broke down like this: breakfast / three back-to-back-to-back seminars with Bob D’Eith from Music BC, Natasha Duprey from S.L. Feldman & Associates about music licensing, and Brent Bain from FACTOR about music grants / Lunch / Then free time where we spent most of our time with Shawn Cole and Paul Boechler working on pre-production for our song for Vancouver 125 / Mattlock and Swamp Grant made it to the zip line (2nd longest in Canada!) at the end of free time before we headed to Law 101, again with Bob D’Eith / We ended the seminar part of the day with Lynn Ross from SOCAN / Dinner / the nightly showcases with the Oh Wells, Avairis, 41st and Home and the Boom Booms / After the showcases we headed back to the studios to sacrifice our shut-eye for some more snarky comments from Shawn Cole recording.

A well deserved nap looks like it may be on the horizon for some of us this free time period, but the call of the pool is sounding very enticing.

Peak Bootcamp : Day #2

Our second (but first full) day has come to an end, and I’m beat. We had so much fun, and took in so much info (and so much sunshine) …was that a haiku? Whoa… time for bed, but first, a little more about today perhaps.

Here’s today in a nutshell: Breakfast / Seminar with Grant Lawrence / Lunch / A series of 3 quick seminars with Janine Verreault, Tamara Stanners, & Grant Lawrence again / Then our daily free time period, in which pretty much everyone was either on “THE BLOB” (photos to come), or working on their new Vancouver-inspired tune / Dinner / Then the nightly 4 showcases. Tonight was: Hilary Grist, The Belle Game, Fields of Green, and Sex With Strangers. What a lineup – everyone killed it! So stoked to see everyone else play.

Peak Bootcamp : Day #1

What a whirlwind of a day! Here’s a quick rundown.

8:00 am
Alexis from Sex With Strangers arrives at our house in scenic East Van to join us for the trip up to camp.

8:30 am
Finally get on the road, after a half hour of last minute tooth-brushing, packing, and general disorganization.

9:00 am
Get as far as Burnaby, and have to make a pit stop at McDonalds so Mattlock can get his morning fix.

9:30 am
Actually get on the road. Straight cruisin’.

11:00 am
Drive past a strikingly handsome group of familiar young men stranded on the side of the road with a blown out tire. Pretty sure it’s Acres of Lions. We pull over, stop, and reverse sketchily along the shoulder of the mighty Trans-Canada back to the gang. A brief roadside hangout ensues. They assure us BCAA will be there to save the day shortly.

11:15 am
After a quick roadside pee break, we hit the road once again, Princeton bound.

12:00 pm
I awake from an uncomfortable, restless nap in the parking lot of a weird Princeton dollar store or something. We buy discount sunscreen to protect my weak ginger skin and Grant’s thousand tattoos, along with some sesame snaps to calm the raging appetites.

12:45 pm
WE FINALLY GET TO BOOTCAMP! We check in, have some delicious lunch, and load in our gear. We’re shown to our room, (inhabited by only the best of dudes) and settle in.

3:00 pm
After a couple hours of relaxing, swimming, and general hanging out in this man-made wonderland, we all filter into groups of 4 bands to do some pre-production on our Vancouver inspired tunes. Lucky for us, we get paired up with none other than the mighty Shawn Coleaka “Dr. Boss” at the producing helm, along with The Matinee, 41st & Home, and The Belle Game. Good tunes, good times.

8:00 pm
Following a delicious dinner and another swim, everyone met up for the annual faculty vs bands ball hockey game. Despite the valiant effort of the faculty, the bands reigned victorious for the 3rd year in a row. Our very own Matt Lockhart took on the role of coach for our side, and was compared to “a Spartan General”… among other things I’m sure. The game was a rager, both teams played hard, but in the end our side took it home.

Keep an eye out for the video of Matt’s impromptu “victory speech” hopefully coming within the next couple days.

The rest of the night was spent celebrating the victory by some night swimming, ping pong, foosball, and more relaxing out in the beautiful man-made outdoors.

PEAK Performance Project Concert Series #4

When I Get Grown : 4 Days Left

There are only 4 days left to purchase our single When I Get Grown and help us support Cancer research. For those who are unfamiliar, we have had the song available for download from HERE with all proceeds going to fight cancer. We began this campaign last month on July 12th and are ending it this Friday August 12th.

We’ve been so humbled by the response of everyone who has downloaded the song, tweeted about what we’re doing, or sharing it over other channels (even good ol’ fashioned word of mouth!). You all warmed our hearts to join us in fighting this terrible disease.
